Hermes Award-winner! Surviving cardiac arrest

Simon Henley was on a video call with his manager when he suddenly disappeared from the screen. He had fallen to the floor with a cardiac arrest. Not to be confused with an acute myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest is usually fatal, requiring a defibrillator and immediate CPR to revive the patient. Facing hostile patients, Part 2

In this re-air of our two-part, award-winning podcast series, we discuss how physical violence in the healthcare workplace is on the rise. Healthcare workers are more in danger of violence than are police officers or prison guards. Looking at the labor force in general, healthcare workers have five times the likelihood of facing violence than workers across all other industries. And that doesn’t include the verbal abuse. The 1984 Hatch-Waxman Act codified the 505(b)(2) drug approval pathway and allowed the use of studies from a previously approved drug. Improving sepsis bundle compliance

Sepsis has long been a challenge for healthcare organizations. It is a leading cause of morbidity, readmissions and mortality. As a reaction to an infection, sepsis can spread quickly, progress to septic shock and eventually shut down organ systems. Patient-initiated Portal Communications

Navigating patient-initiated portal communication to create better experiences for patients is a national priority for healthcare systems.  The goal of the patient-initiated portal communication project collaboration between Vizient and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) is to understand the different ways that health systems are responding to patient-initiated portal communication, and the usage of e-visits, and its impact on the Quintuple AIM, equity, quality, patient experience, care team experience and cost. Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) to decrease LOS and improve capacity

We know that social determinants of health such as housing instability, food insecurity, transportation barriers and limited access to education significantly influence individuals’ health outcomes. By screening for these factors, healthcare providers can provide, or healthcare providers can gain a more comprehensive understanding of patients' lives beyond their medical conditions. This holistic approach allows for tailored interventions that address the root causes of health disparities.

Rollout Strategy Vexing: Pediatric RSV prevention strategy implementation challenges

RSV infections are not new and have devastating impacts. The recent advent of new prevention strategies has renewed the focus on the disease with a hopeful outlook. For the last 25 years, the only FDA approved product preventing RSV, lower respiratory tract disease, was palivizumab or Synagis, a monoclonal antibody indicated for use in high risk infants children and administered intramuscularly monthly throughout the RSV season.
In May, the first ever RSV vaccines were approved, Arexvy and Abrysvo. These two new RSV vaccines were approved for use in adults greater than or equal to 60 years of age. In August this year, one of the RSV vaccines, Abrysvo, also received approval for expanded use for maternal vaccination to prevent RSV lower respiratory tract disease in infants.
Nirsevimab or Beyfortus, a new long-acting monoclonal antibody, was approved in July for prevention of RSV lower respiratory tract disease in infants and children. Compared with palivizumab, nirsevimab is indicated for a much broader patient population including recommended use in all infants less than eight months of age, born during or entering their first RSV season.
The rollout of nirsevimab has proved challenging due to supply shortages, among other factors. Today we discuss the new RSV prevention strategies, focusing on the pediatric patient population, as well as the recent shortages with nirsevimab. Building relationships: referral and marketing strategy for remote patient monitoring

Remote patient monitoring, commonly referred to as RPM, is a type of telehealth in which healthcare providers monitor patients outside the traditional care setting using digital medical devices. The data collected from these devices are then electronically transferred to providers for care management. Automated feedback and workflows can be built into data collection, and out-of-range values or concerning readings can be flagged and then addressed by patient’s care team. In this episode two leading experts discuss building relationships to help drive referrals for an RPM program.

Zero Restraint Use

Restraints can have a negative emotional impact on pediatric patients. Being physically restrained can be traumatic and lead to feelings of helplessness, anxiety and loss of control. Having to put pediatric patients in restraints takes a toll on staff as well.

Every year, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) makes revisions, additions and deletions to the coding guidelines that healthcare organizations and practices use for reporting, billing and reimbursement. The guidelines for 2024 include a number of new guidelines dealing with social determinants of health (SDOH) issues. It is crucial for practices to fully understand all the guideline updates for accurate reporting and maximized reimbursement.
